Swimming helps you maintain your weight

When you swim, you burn around 350-400 calories. That way, 30 minutes of swimming beats 30 minutes of walking, running, or cycling while avoiding standing in a boring gym.

Swimming reduces stress levels

And it's actually no joke. When you swim, you basically just lie by yourself without having to take into account what others are doing. Your thoughts can flow wherever you want, and it's just relaxing. Especially after a long day at work/school. At the same time, swimming helps boost your self-confidence and self-belief because you're just being yourself in the water.

Swimming will make you happy

A recent study has shown that swimmers of all levels are less likely to feel depressed, angry, or confused during and immediately after swimming. This also means that non-swimmers and amateurs can feel just as good as competitive swimmers due to the release of feel-good hormones in the body during swimming.

Swimming strengthens muscles

Pulling through water can be up to 44 times heavier than pulling through the air, which means you need to use more muscles to swim through the water. In this way, the water also acts as a form of weights or machines in the gym, but without the need to acquire all kinds of equipment.

Swimming is (almost) injury-free

When you swim, you only carry 10% of your own weight due to the water carrying you instead. At the same time, it's easy to move in the water and the joints hardly move at all. This together means that swimming is almost impossible to get injured compared to many other sports such as football, strength training, and running.

It improves your sleep

A study has shown that people who consistently swim a few times a week are more likely to say they had a good night's sleep compared to non-swimmers. Swimmers avoid annoying sleep problems such as waking up too early or snoring.

Swimming is sweat-free

Probably the biggest advantage over running, strength training, cycling and more, but it's actually true. Well, almost. Because you (of course) still sweat when you swim, quite a lot in fact, which is why it's VERY important to take in water while swimming, but you don't feel it at all. Therefore, you won't notice feeling overheated or sweaty either, as the surrounding water is constantly cooling you down.

Swimming lowers the risk of diseases

Besides the fact that swimming as a sport is (very) good for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and general fitness, it has also been shown to lower blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure and reduce bad cholesterol in the blood. This means that by swimming regularly, you are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, heart problems and joint problems.

Swimming is for everyone

There really is no age limit or anything else for swimming. Anyone can learn to swim over a few weeks if they want to. And once they've learnt, they can swim at whatever level they want. That's why both newborns and 80-year-olds swim. In addition, swimming is also particularly good for pregnant women, as it helps them to relax and achieve greater flexibility.

Is swimming a good way to build muscle?

No and yes. It's as simple as that when it comes to swimming and building muscle, but there's a lot more to these two little words.

When you've watched swimming on TV at the Olympics and World Championships, you've probably realised that all the swimmers, especially men and women, stand out like a sore thumb. That's true, but at the end of the day, those big muscles aren't actually due to the swimming itself, but more to the training in the gym.

The goal of a professional/competitive swimmer is not to build a huge amount of muscle mass: the large muscle mass weighs a lot and makes the body sink even more, which is not a good thing. Instead, a competitive swimmer should balance strength and endurance.

If you want to build big muscles… Then you shouldn't just keep swimming.

Instead, you should consider strength training as a supplement to swimming.

On the other hand, swimming is good for…

Burning fat and getting fit. Yes, swimming is probably one of the best sports for this, because in the water you work all muscle groups and therefore burn considerably more. And because you burn so much fat, you will also find that the muscles on your body are more visible, which probably gives the impression that swimming builds good muscles.

But you don't actually do that. Or to put it another way, in a different and simpler way:

If your goal is to build large muscle mass. Then go with strength training.

If your goal is to get in shape and get fit. Then go with swimming.
